1. Who we are

Baseline Energy is a registered trademark and a service of Energy Associates International, the operating name of Energy Associates Inc., incorporated in Alberta, Canada.

Our website is knowyourbaseline.ca. We operate a free Alberta Energy Broker Quote Decoder — a tool that lets business customers compare an energy price quote against current wholesale market data to see whether the margin baked in is fair or excessive.

This Privacy Notice explains how we handle personal information collected through the website, in compliance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

2. Our independence

We believe transparency about how we earn money is part of handling your information fairly, so we state it plainly here.

Baseline Energy is an independent consulting service. We advise Alberta businesses during energy contract procurement. We are not an energy broker and we do not sign energy contracts on your behalf — you sign directly with your supplier.

We are paid by our clients through a transparent, on-bill, unit-consumption-based fee ($/MWh). We receive no commissions, referral fees, or rebates from any energy supplier or broker.

The Quote Decoder's verdict is driven entirely by market data. It is not influenced by any commercial relationship with a supplier or broker, because we have none.

This independence is also why we collect only the minimum information needed to run the tool and advise you — we have no financial incentive to share your data with energy suppliers or brokers.

3. What we collect and why

We collect personal information only when it is necessary for a specific purpose we tell you about at the time of collection.

4. How we use your information

We use the information we collect for these purposes only:

We do not use your information for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects. We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with energy suppliers or brokers.

5. Who processes your data

We use third-party service providers to operate the site. Each provider acts on our instructions and may only use your data for the purpose we specify. We remain accountable for your information under PIPEDA, regardless of where processing occurs.

Some of these providers are located outside Canada. When your data is transferred to another country, it may be subject to that country's laws. We take steps to ensure appropriate protections are in place, and we remain responsible for the protection of your information throughout.

6. How long we keep it

We keep personal information only as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected, or as required by law.

When a retention period ends, we delete or anonymize the information so it can no longer be linked to you.

7. Cookies and tracking

A cookie is a small text file stored in your browser. We use three categories:

Strictly necessary cookies

These keep the site working — for example, remembering your cookie preferences or maintaining your session through the decoder steps. No consent is required for these.

"Remember me" cookie (optional, opt-in only)

On the email verification screen, you can tick a box to stay verified on your device for up to 30 days. If you do, we store an opaque token in a cookie — this token contains no personal data (no email address, no code, nothing identifiable). The token maps to your verified status on our server; it expires after 30 days. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser cookies or clicking "Forget this device." Because you opt in explicitly, this cookie does not require a separate banner — but we disclose it here.

Analytics cookies (consent required)

If you accept our analytics banner, we may use Google Analytics 4 and/or Meta Pixel to understand how visitors use the site. These cookies are not loaded unless you consent. You can withdraw consent at any time via the "Cookie preferences" link in the footer.

8. Commercial email and CASL

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) governs commercial electronic messages. Here is how we comply.

Marketing emails

We send newsletters, market updates, and promotional content only to people who have given us express consent by ticking the opt-in box on our landing page forms. That box is never pre-ticked. Every marketing email includes our sender identification, our physical mailing address, and a working unsubscribe link. We process unsubscribe requests within 10 business days.

Transactional emails

We send verification codes and booking confirmations regardless of marketing consent, because they directly facilitate a transaction you requested. These emails contain no marketing content.

Consent records

For each marketing consent, we log the timestamp, the form you used, the version of the consent text you saw, and a hashed IP address. We keep this record for at least 3 years after you withdraw consent, so we can demonstrate compliance if asked.

Sender identification

All emails are sent on behalf of: Baseline Energy, a service of Energy Associates International, operating name of Energy Associates Inc., Suite 311, 234-5149 Country Hills Blvd. NW, Calgary, Alberta, T3A 5K8, Canada.

9. Your rights

Under PIPEDA and PIPA Alberta, you have the right to:

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@knowyourbaseline.ca.

10. Children

The Quote Decoder is a business tool intended for adults managing commercial energy contracts. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has submitted information through the site, please contact us at privacy@knowyourbaseline.ca and we will delete it promptly.

11. Breach notification

If a security breach creates a Real Risk of Significant Harm (RROSH) to any individual, Energy Associates Inc., operating as Energy Associates International and doing business as Baseline Energy, will:

These obligations are set out in the Breach of Security Safeguards Regulations under PIPEDA.
